A Rejuvenated Breakfast Nook

The before picture

We decorated this breakfast nook for a client who had an elegant, classical style (left). She chose a wall covering and border in soothing neutral tones with a marbleized shadow-stripe and neo-classical scroll border. We created a draped window treatment in keeping with the lavish ambience created by the client’s crystal chandelier purchased in Europe.

This client eventually sold her house and recommended our services to the person who bought it, and the result was that we got the rare opportunity to decorate the same space twice! This is an unusual case where we are responsible for “before” AND “after” of a room.

The second client to live in this space loved the colors and layout of the home, but she wanted her breakfast nook to reflect her style, which is a bit more casual and eclectic than that of the previous owner. She liked the earthy and neutral color scheme of the walls, so we kept them the same. We then designed a tailored window treatment for her that repeated the earth tones of the wallpaper.

We used a cream and coffee check silk fabric and designed a cornice with box pleats, lining the pleats with cream-colored silk, topped off with thick piping, each pleat with an oversized self-covered button. The solid soft latte curtain is edged with the checked fabric in the valance to coordinate the look.

The client chose a granite-topped table that matched the granite countertops of the adjoining kitchen, with comfortable, armed “school-house” chairs in a light wood. Note the eclectic splashes of color added by the client’s framed flour sack and Mexican pottery pieces. This is a great example of how changes to light fixtures, furnishings, window treatments and accessories can reflect the distinct personality of the people that occupy a space.
