A Home Addition

The clients who now own this house, once the childhood home of actress Renee Zellweger, needed additional space for an office/game room and an additional bedroom for their family.

The owner was very specific about his needs: he did not want the addition in the back to exceed the existing roof line height or to disturb the newly installed roof turbines, and wanted to create a walkway from the garage to the house. The addition needed to provide as much light as possible in order to avoid creating a “cave” effect to the existing home.

We designed and built an addition that met all the owner’s requirements and greatly enhanced the owner’s lifestyle and the property value.

This project was extensive, and included relocating the electrical service, as well as incorporating the framing around an existing fireplace. Due to the proximity of the swimming pool, we installed tempered windows for child safety.

Matching the roof lines was a special challenge on this project, as we had to deal with a number of different slopes, angles and height variations.

The extreme height variation between the garage and the house made it a challenge to incorporate a walkway. The walkway had to appear as part of the original house while camouflaging the height variation between the two areas.

On the exterior facade, we installed a combination of brick wainscot and Hardi board stucco style material above the brick. The stucco style repeated the etched design that surrounded the swimming pool. The transition from the existing brick to the new brick was made less noticeable by installing a brick wainscot.

The finished product was a light and bright addition with interior details such as custom built-ins in the office/game room and porcelain floor tile that we also designed to be cut as baseboard. The transition from the existing carpet to the new tile was enhanced with a pebbled accent border which incorporated elements of both rooms.

The final result: a light and airy spacious addition that fulfilled all the needs for the family: more livable space and an aesthetically pleasing overall design that never seemed like an addition, but looked as though it were part of the original home design.
